PUBG is not all killing, maiming, and trolling. It is a bit of a fashion show, too. So much so that the rarest PUBG items and cosmetics can be bought on the Steam Community Market for hundreds of dollars. You get these items from PUBG crates, but if you have never played a game with a crate system in it before then the whole idea can be a little confusing. Hungry for your first chicken dinner? Read our PUBG survival guide. How do you earn crates, what items can you get from crates, how do you unlock crates, and how much do PUBG crates cost? Join us below as we explain all that and more.
How to earn PUBG crates
You can obtain PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds crates either by buying them with the in-game currency, Battle Points (BP), or by purchasing them on the Steam Community Marketplace using real money. Battle Points are earned through playing the game. You get more BP per match the more kills you get and the longer you remain alive.
PUBG crates cost more BP with each subsequent crate you earn in a week, which helps maintain the rarity of items and ensure the game has an item economy. Your first PUBG crates costs 700 BP, the price then increases significantly for each new crate, resetting a week after you purchased the first crate. There is a limit of six PUBG crates per week, here are the prices: First crate: 700 BP ; Second crate: 1,400 BP; Third crate: 2,800 BP; Fourth crate: 4,200 BP; Fifth crate: 5,600 BP; Sixth crate: 7,000 BP
When you buy a PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds crate with BP it is randomly decided whether you will receive a Survivor Crate or a Wanderer Crate – these crates do not require keys to be opened. All other PUBG crates can only be obtained by purchasing them with real money through the Steam Community Marketplace.
How to unlock PUBG crates
Currently, only one type of PUBG crate requires a key to be opened: the Gamescom Invitational Crate. You can purchase a key for this crate in-game or from the Steam Community Marketplace for around $2.50.
What types of PUBG crates are there?
Ignoring the discontinued Pioneer Crate, there are currently three different PUBG crates that can be purchased and opened: Wanderer Crate, Survivor Crate, and Gamescom Invitational Crate.
Previously, you could also obtain a Twitch Prime Box and a Pre-Order Crate, but these have been replaced by sets that can be bought through the Steam Community Marketplace for a small fortune. Likewise, you can also buy sets of the rarest cosmetics for huge amounts of money – here are the various PUBG sets you can buy:
Tuxedo Set (Male) ; Tuxedo Set (Female) ; Instructor Set ; Tracksuit Set (Yellow) ; Tracksuit Set ; Black School Uniform Set (Female) ; Black School Uniform Set (Male) ; Blue School Uniform Set (Female) ; Blue School Uniform Set (Male) ; Ivory School Uniform Set (Female) ; Ivory School Uniform Set (Male) ; Twitch Prime Set
What items are in each PUBG crate?
PUBG items can all be bought separately from the Steam Community Marketplace if you are after a specific one. However, if you are not interested in parting with real money for cosmetics then the majority of these PUBG items can be found in either the Wanderer Crate or Survivor Crate for free – it will take some grinding, is all. Each crate rewards you with one item from a pool of 26. That means there are a total of 56 different PUBG cosmetics that can be acquired for free.
